On Studying Philosophy

My difficulties in studying Philosophy …

About

Here I write about a wide range of topics., philosophy, gardening, dog training, yeast, many things.

I also front my photography which I call ‘between the two’. We are pulled between two poles: empathy and abstraction. The idea is that we have a need to escape the chaotic aspects of existence by imposing order through abstraction: geometric regularity and concepts (‘form’). At the same time we seek meaning and harmony through relations with people and objects (which often are messy in the way they are given to us).

My camera explores the middle kingdom, that which uses abstraction to refine how we feel and that which, through feeling, recognises how form shapes what we think.

Between the two is as much about the work of self as it is about the work of photography.

What remains after the tide goes out?

I’m Tony Cearns.

After a long career in business and finance, I have returned to academia. I am now a postgraduate research student in Philosophy.

Other outlets

I write two other blogs, both on substack:

‘detangling Dementia’, - a blog about caring for my wife. We live with her early-onset Alzheimer’s Dementia. But she also lives with “me”

‘like tears washed away by the rain’, - my views about photography, a life-long passion of mine.
