Here I write about a wide range of topics., philosophy, gardening, dog training, yeast, many things.

I also front some of my photography. I think about photography in the following way, based on a phrase from T.S Eliot: ‘between two waves’.

We are caught between two waves,: Abstraction and Feeling. Abstraction imposes conceptual order on existence. We connect to people and objects through Feeling. Abstraction and Feeling go together in a kind of virtuous hermeneutic spiral. In a photograph, Abstraction comes from composition and framing, foreground and background, inclusion and exclusion. Feeling comes from how the composition is poised: the quality of light, gestures, balance, the way light bounces here and there.

Hi, I’m Tony Cearns.

After a long career in business and finance, I have returned to academia. I am now a postgraduate research student in Philosophy, specialising in the thoughts of Wittgenstein.
